The 1776 painting was created by J.C. Leyendecker. He painted it to serve as the cover of the July 4, 1931 Independence Day issue of The Saturday Evening Post. The work was commissioned to visually celebrate the national holiday and instill patriotic pride during the Great Depression. Leyendecker composed the image of a resolute minuteman and a bald eagle to project American resilience and unity. Ultimately, the piece was designed to captivate newsstand consumers and drive magazine sales.
